South Sudan rebel leader Riek Machar back in Juba

South Sudanese rebel leader Riek Machar arrived in Juba on Tuesday, returning to the capital for the first time since a conflict erupted more than two years ago.

Machar was last week expected in South Sudanese capital but a row over his security detail caused an impasse.

South Sudanese government had announced on Monday that it is ready to receive Machar who is set to be sworn in as the first Vice President of the Republic in a ceremony slated for Juba.

Already General Gatwech Dual, the Chief of General Staff of the armed opposition faction of the Sudan’s People’s Liberation Army is in Juba for the event.

Machar is expected to form a transitional government with President Salva Kiir while General Dual is to participate in the overseeing of the transitional security arrangement matter with his counterpart General Paul Malong Awan.

The rebel leader is also set to command a separate army and police in the country for over one year before his faction’s national army is unified with the army commanded by President Salva Kiir in addition to nominating 10 Cabinet Ministers from his faction and governing oil-rich states of Unity and Upper, according to South Sudan tribunal.
