Speaker Elachi, Mueke oppose Kalonzo on Presidential term limit

Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi and former Nairobi Deputy Governor Jonathan Mueke have opposed Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s remarks suggesting that he would support President Uhuru Kenyatta in seeking a third term in office.

Speaking on Citizen TV’s Day Break show, the two leaders insisted that the Constitution in clear on the presidential term limits, adding that the law should be the guiding principle.

“Let us follow what the law says, let us accept that our constitution has been so democratic in terms of the president’s term,” said Elachi.

Mueke said the presidential limits have been outlined in the constitution for a reason, adding that after 10 years of serving, another able Kenyan should be given the chance to lead the country.

The former Nairobi deputy governor further spoke against the referendum debate warning that should State officers be drawn into the ongoing politicking, this would derail the government’s development agenda.

“The big four could continue if we have a cabinet that is not political, a cabinet that is working on delivering the president’s agenda,” said Mueke.

During a meeting of Kamba leaders in Machakos County last Friday, Kalonzo Musyoka claimed that the current Constitution is skewed to winner-takes-it-all  and the ripple effect is a balkanised nation.

Kalonzo, who is rooting for an expanded Executive in the Constitutional review process, hinted that should President Kenyatta be interested in another term in officer, he (Kalonzo) would support him.

“Tuungane, with other communities, tumsaidie ndugu Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta. Kama atasema, after the new Constitution tumeiunda, ‘mimi nataka kuendelea mbele’ ntamwambia nitakusupport (Let’s come together with other communities and help our brother Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta. If he says, after the new Constitution, that he wants to proceed I will support him),” said Kalonzo.

The Wiper leader’s remarks have been met with mixed reactions, with a majority of leaders opposing his sentiments.
