Speaker Justin Muturi wants IEBC commissioners reduced

National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi has recommended the reduction of commissioners at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from the current nine to three.

Muturi says that the constitution requires independent commissions to have a minimum of three commissioners making the additional 6 serving at the commission unnecessary.

Speaking during a breakfast meeting with editors Muturi said the six out of the nine IEBC commissioners are only meant to serve regional interests and therefore form an unnecessary burden on the tax payer.

His proposal would, however, require an amendment to the IEBC Act which stipulates that the commission shall be made up of a chairman and eight members.

The Commission is constitutionally made up of nine commissioners who are appointed by the President of Kenya and confirmed by the Kenyan Parliament.

Each member serves a six-year term.
