Speaker Muturi declares Kibra Parliamentary seat vacant

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has officially declared the Kibra Parliamentary seat vacant following the death of area Member of Parliament Ken Okoth.

This now paves the way for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to set a date for the Kibra by-election.

“In pursuance of the provisions of section 16 (3) of the Elections Act, 2011, I command you that, due notice being given, you do cause election to be held according to law of a member of service in the National Assembly for the said constituency,” said Muturi in a Gazette notice addressed to the IEBC dated August 13.

The IEBC is required to prepare for a by-election within three months of the issuance of the notice by the Speaker.

The late Kibra MP Ken Okoth died at The Nairobi Hospital on Friday, July 26 after a long battle with colon cancer.
