Speaker Muturi Says EACC must be reformed to address serious graft cases

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has called for the restructuring of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to stop the graft body from being ‘petty’ and non-beneficial to Kenyans.

Speaking at Karatina PCEA church during a fundraiser for Women’s Guild projects, Muturi said that it’s high time the graft body is restructured to allow it investigate and prosecute serious economic crimes as opposed to petty crimes.

Muturi said the Justice and Legal Committee of Parliament need re-look into the matter immediately as the commission is degrading to a body that just investigates irrelevant issues instead of focusing on issues that actually matter.

Muturi said that over 55,000 reports have been made by the body about legislators yet it has less than 200 investigators who cannot effectively make any solid probe.

“The EACC needs to start categorizing offences instead of just handling them randomly. You cannot continue dealing with petty offences while deliberately ignoring serious graft issues,” said Muturi.

He also hit out at the opposition for accusing President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto of failing to curb corruption within the government saying that there are constitutional bodies that have been tasked with the responsibility of dealing with graft in the country.

Kieni MP Kanini Kega took a swipe at the EACC saying quick amendments need to be made to its operations to ensure serious economic crimes are dealt with fully.

“EACC needs to start pressing harder on serious graft issues such as the NYS scandal that has definitely poked a large hole in our economy. We can no longer continue watching the slow nature with which these issues are handled,” he lamented.
