Special police unit to combat cattle theft in Kuria

A special police unit, together with the Anti-Stock Theft Unit will be deployed to Kuria East to avert the rising cases of cattle rustling that has threatened peace in the region.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi on Sunday, December 25, Kuria East Sub County Deputy County Commissioner, Wesley Koech, said a special police unit has been undergoing training on how to combat the cattle rustling menace and will team up with the Anti-Stock Theft Unit in dealing with the problem that has led to deaths of hundreds of civilians and theft of cattle.

Mr Koech noted that cases of cattle rustling have been on the rise over the last two weeks saying that the persistent drought has made it difficult to identify the animals’ footsteps and trace them.

He said that cattle rustling remain the main security challenge in the area after a successful combating of the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

In the past one week, armed bandits made away with four cows from a Kuria East farmer but noted that police were still in their pursuit.

He urged Kuria residents to assist the police identify the cattle rustlers so that they can weed them out of the society.

He said it was very unfortunate that some cattle rustlers are known by locals but they fear reporting them to the authorities.
