SRC To Tame MCAs’ ‘Extravagance’

Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) chair Sarah Serem now says that MCAs have wasted money on expensive local and foreign trips without being called to account.

“If need be, we will abolish the allowances that lend themselves to misuse of public funds intended for service to the people of Kenya.” Serem said.

MCAs have come under sharp criticism after the controller of budget recently revealed that at least Ksh. 2 billion was spent by MCAs on foreign trips in the last financial year alone.

The MCAs have also been criticized for seeking to earn sitting and travel allowances above their allocated quotas.

An interim Independence Compliance Survey by SRC on 16 counties has further revealed that MCAs hire extra personnel outside any policy guidelines.

Last month a report by the Controller of Budget revealed that a member of County Assembly in took home over 200,000 shillings as sitting allowances in a month.

The SRC is set to complete its Independence Compliance Survey by the end of this month. The review is set to create a new allowance structure for public service employees.
