Standoff as Meru Senator Mithika Linturi blocks wife from accessing home

Embattled Meru Senator Mithika Linturi on Monday evening reportedly denied his estranged wife Marianne Jebet Keitanny access to their Runda home.

This comes hours after the High Court granted Ms. Keitanny access to the home for the purpose of picking her children’s belonging.

However, sources who spoke to Citizen TV on Monday evening said the politician defied the orders claiming not to have even received them.

Sources further intimated that Ms. Keittany was, for the better part of the evening, still stranded outside the gate as the Senator – backed by police officers – blocked her entry.

Ms. Keitanny had moved to court to claim Ksh.10 million she alleged to have lost during the December 19, 2018, scuffle at their Runda home which led to her eviction.

While seeking a court order to allow her back to her home, she said she currently does not have a place to call home and that her children who will soon resume school have no books or any other items.

According to a document before court, the two were married under Meru customary laws after both parties had divorced from their previous marriages.

The court heard that, together, they have registered several companies, acquired assets together and that Ms. Keitanny had been performing her duties as a wife.

According to the lawyer representing Senator Linturi, however, Ms. Keitanny failed to disclose to the court that she filed a similar case before the Magistrate Court where they appeared on December 20, 2018.

“It is an abuse of process for the same litigant to be seeking same court orders before three other courts concurrently,” stated the lawyer.

On November 14, 2018, Ms. Keitanny obtained restraining orders against the politician.

In his ruling, Milimani Commercial Court Senior Resident Magistrate I. Orenge granted exclusive occupation of the besieged couple’s shared residence to her.

He further barred the politician from loitering near the home or any other place where his wife frequents.

According to Magistrate Orenge’s interim order, the Senator was restrained “from physically or sexually abusing or threatening to abuse the Applicant, the Applicant’s staff, their six children and/or any other person associated with the Applicant.”

Mr. Linturi was also ordered to allow Ms. Keitanny to enter any other of his residences in the company of an enforcement officer for the purpose of collecting her personal belongings pending hearing and determination of an application dated October 25, 2018 filed by Keitanny.
