Star of the Sea, Tononoka schools closed over COVID-19 cases

Star of the Sea Secondary School and Tononoka High School in Mombasa have been closed following positive cases of COVID-19.

Reports indicate that some teachers and students test results turned positive forcing management to shut down of the two institutions .

Mombasa County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo declined to reveal the number of those who tested positive saying they are still waiting for compilation of all the test results.

According to him, Mombasa County is finding difficulty in dealing with the increasing number of COVID-19 patients as hospitals are full to capacity.

“Kaunti ya Mombasa inakumbwa na wakati mgumu kuhudumia idadi kubwa ya wagonjwa wa corona waliofurika hospitalini na kupelekea uhaba wa vitanda na hasaa vya wagonjwa mahututi,” he said on Wednesday.

The previous day, Commissioner Kitiyo had warned Mombasa residents against violating COVID-19 guidelines saying that the recent trend is worrying.

He revealed that it is becoming increasingly difficult to get unoccupied beds at the emergency sections and Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in hospitals within the county.

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho also warned that county officers will have to re-enforce stringent measures should the situation become worse.

“I urge you, the people of Mombasa, if you want us to do well on COVID-19 please wear your mask when you are close to people,” he said.

The two leaders spoke during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at the Mama Ngina Waterfront on Tuesday.

Kenya’s total caseload for coronavirus is currently at 46,144 out of a cumulative sample size of 632,669 tests conducted since March.

Total number of fatalities in the country are 858 while recoveries are 32,760.
