Starehe holds private memorial for the late Ken Okoth

A memorial service in honor of the late Ken Okoth will be held on Wednesday at the Starehe Boys Centre and School.

A statement from the Old Starehians Society said the memorial service will be ‘intimate’.

Invited guests are listed as government officials, diplomatic corps,  the academia fraternity, Starehe alumni and students who were sponsored by the late Okoth.

The Kibra MP passed away at the Nairobi Hospital on Friday last week after a long battle with colorectal cancer.

He was an alumnus of Starehe Boys Centre and in 2013, during an interview with the Daily Nation, said:

“After Class Eight and 613 out of 700 marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) I was called to Starehe Boys’ Centre. Marks and background qualified me for a sponsorship that saw Save the Children Fund come to my rescue. I received a four-year full sponsorship… Figure what would have happened to me if the scholarship did not come along. I would probably have gone into bhang in those formative teenage years. Or I would have joined criminal gangs in the slum. I would probably be dead by now.”

Key members of the civil society and representatives from human rights organisation are also expected at the event that starts at 2pm.

This is after a private viewing ceremony at the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi at 10am that is expected to end at 1pm.

The public viewing is scheduled to also take place at the Lee Funeral Home as from 2pm to 4pm.

On Thursday, there will be a funeral Service at the Moi Girls High School in Nairobi from 10am.

On Friday, another memorial service organised by the human rights sector will be held at the University of Nairobi grounds.

The final funeral service will take place at Got-Rateng’ grounds in Kasipul Kabondo Constituency.

Okoth’s family are adamant that they want him buried him at Amoso village in Kochia ward, Homa Bay County next to where his late father was laid to rest.
