State of the Nation: What Kenyans expect from Uhuru

The war on corruption and handshake politics are expected to top President Uhuru Kenyatta’s State of the Nation address on Thursday afternoon.

As per the Constitution ,President Kenyatta will outline measures and progress taken in fulfilling Article 10 of the Constitution on national values, international obligations and the status of the country’s national security.

This as he fulfills Article 132 of the Constitution that requires him to address Parliament every year on his administrations progress.

The President is also expected to once again clear the air on the handshake deal with ODM leader Raila Odinga.

“He must come out very clearly that this unity deal, this reconciliation this bringing together there is nothing fishy, he must come out and build confidence,” said Majority leader Aden Duale

But hours before President Kenyatta’s State of the Nation address, sharp divisions within the House continue to play out, the clash pitting the factions within the ruling Jubilee party.

“Whether you want to be President in 2022, you are better off inheriting a united country that inheriting a divided country that is going in different directions,” said Homa Bay Women Representative Gladys Wanga.

Team ‘Tanga Tanga’ and team ‘Kieleweke’ are said to be working with the opposition clashed over a proposed bill by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro to classify corruption as a capital offense, a bill some claim is set to undermine investigative agencies.

“ The president must come and assure the country that the war on corruption is a war that he wants to make part of his legacy that is not targeting any individual or community…,” said Duale.

Duale has since revealed that they have already passed legislation to support the big four agenda including the national housing fund, amended the housing act, passed health laws which President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to sign next week, created sports special fund, brought about new irrigation bill and reduced taxation among others.

The President is also expected to drum up support for the recently launched Huduma Namba as well as delve into matters concerning the National Housing Fund, the Housing Act, Health Laws which are expected to be signed next week, Sports Special Fund (65 % from Betting and Lottery to go to UHC), Irrigation Bill and reduced Taxation.
