Stephjoy students remanded for allegedly burning school

Three form two Stephjoy Boys High School students suspected of torching a dormitory that led to the death of three students will be detained until August 10th to allow for conclusion of investigations into the incident.

The three were arraigned at the Nairobi Milimani Law Court before Deputy Registrar Rose Otieno.

The prosecution filed a miscellaneous application asking the court to have the students detained for another 14 days to allow for further investigations.

The prosecution said that the three had been spotted around Dormitory 8 late in the night when they should have been asleep in Dormitory 4.

The investigation team fears that should the three be released, they will interfere with the on-going investigations.

The application by the prosecution was not debated since the Judges are away for training.

The Deputy Registrar has, therefore, placed the matter before a duty judge for hearing on Monday.

On Wednesday, police ruled out electrical fault as the cause of the fire that killed the three students.

The school director, Joy Mugambi maintains that there was no indication of unrest at the school, instead pointing a finger at external forces.

She argued that the school had been involved in efforts to fight alcoholism in the neighboring areas and thus putting it at risk of attack by illicit liquor brewers and traders.

“We invite the government machinery to investigate if there is any connection between our sustained fight against alcoholism and drug abuse and the fire incidences,” she said in a statement.
