Steve Mbogo demands scrutiny of ballot papers, KIEMS kits in Starehe election

Opposition politician Steve Mbogo has made an application before the High Court asking for scrutiny of ballot boxes and Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) kits used in the Starehe Parliamentary election in the August General Election.

In the application, Mbogo, who came second in the Starehe parliamentary race, wants the electoral material scrutinized in three polling stations where he claims there was massive irregularities.

The application will be heard on January 12, 2018.

Mbogo, who garnered 38,294 votes, is challenging the election of Starehe Member of Parliament Charles Njagua Kanyi aka Jaguar who got 61,262 votes.

In November, Steve Mbogo asked the High Court to order the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct a fresh election for the Starehe Parliamentary seat.

Mbogo, who was testifying in the petition he filed against Jaguar’s election, said that IEBC failed to conduct a free and fair election in August 8.

“I am aggrieved by the said declaration and believe that the member of National Assembly election was riddled with grave breaches of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya and applicable Electoral Laws, ” said Mbogo.

He claimed that the entire process of voting, counting, tallying and declaration and issuing of results for the Starehe parliamentary seat was not done in strict conformity with the law.
