Stop creating false alarm over Mungiki resurgence, police boss warns

Kirinyaga Police Commandant Joseph Nthenge has criticised politicians who have alleged that the outlawed Munguki sect is back in operation in the region, saying their utterances have caused undue alarm in the area.

Speaking from his office on Wednesday, Ngethe said that politicians have been spreading rumours about the outlawed sect in the area, saying that the group has been disrupting political meetings in the region.

Stating that some politicians are using the Mungiki allegations as a political tool, the Police Commandant explained that such alarmist utterances will not be tolerated.

“Politicians should stop saying that there is a group here or there that wants to stop their meetings. If one sees that there is a group out there to ruin their meetings they should come forward and report the matter instead of spreading the word because this will spread tension to the residents,” Ngethe said.

Nthenge called on politicians to steer clear of alarmist and inflammatory comments, especially as the country inches closer to the August 8 poll date.

“This is a political period we should not lose the peace that we have been enjoying for all this time,” said the police boss.

Fake emergencies

Nthenge also warned ambulance drivers against abusing their office by faking emergencies to avoid traffic, saying that this would not be tolerated.

He noted that some have been in the habit of turning on sirens even when they are not handling a medical emergency.

“If it is an emergency, we will move the cars from the road but do not create false alarms on the road,” he added.

Last week, traffic police officers along Kerugoya-Kutus road escaped death narrowly after the county government ambulance driver ran over a road block.

It was later discovered that the diver was not rushing to a medical emergency.
