Stop exploiting the youth, politicians told

Siaya County Governor Cornell Rasanga has asked politicians to stop exploiting the youth in order to cause violence during campaigns.

Speaking at Ambira High School in Ugunja Sub County, Siaya County, the governor instead asked political leaders to empower the youth through income generating activities.

Rasanga, who was speaking during the opening of a five-day youth conference that brought together over 500 youth from four Sub-Counties, accused elected leaders of using the youth to cause unrest during campaigns.

“Elected leaders should generate avenues for jobless youth to at least earn a living,” he said.

The governor stressed the need for legislation barring politicians from dishing out money to voters during campaign periods.

He insisted that the issuing of handouts in both cash and material compromises the decisions of voters.

“The youth who are used by politicians always end up heckling political opponents to justify the handouts they receive from politicians”, he said.

Rasanga advised the youth to adopt the culture of rejecting handouts from politicians and focus on electing leaders based on their manifestos.

He also encouraged the youth to be self-employed instead of waiting for formal employment from both the county and national governments.

Also present was Bishop Joseph Otieno Wasonga of Anglican Church of Kenya, Diocese of Maseno West who explained that the five-day youth conference was aimed at building the youth spiritually and socially.
