Stop forcing women to undergo the cut before marriage – Deputy Governor

Embu Deputy Governor Dorothy Nditi has called on men in the county to stop demanding that women undergo Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) before getting married arguing that it adds value to their life.

Speaking on Monday at the county headquarters during the launch of Pamela Rescue Center, Nditi called upon men to educate and take their girls to church as alternative rite of passage saying it will reduce the Female Genital Mutilation.

She said that men are encouraging the barbaric cultural practice by demanding that women undergo the cut if they are to find husbands.

“This is my appeal to men, please stop demanding that our women undergo the cut because it does not add value to their lives, take these girls to schools and that will change their lives,” she pleaded.

At the same time, she called for speedy construction of more rescue centers where women and girls, who are forced to undergo FGM or are victims of gender violence, can run to. He pointed out that there are so many girls who are victims of the practice and take refuge at police stations and hospitals, which are not very safe for them.

She urged the girls to also say no to such barbaric and outdated practices.
