Student killed by police during school protests in Meru

A student leader at Meru University of Science and Technology was shot and killed by police after protests turned violent.

Evans Njoroge, was together with his fellow students as they took to the streets to protest what they termed as ill-treatment by the school vice principal. They were also demanding for his immediate resignation.

Angry students had blocked the Igembe – Maua road by burning tyres and erecting barricades forcing police to engage and this resulted in the death of Mr. Njoroge.

The protests turned violent after the police arrived and started engaging the students in running battles. Police were accused of using live bullets to deal with the marauding students.

Students accused the vice chancellor of failing to deliver on his promises. They also bemoaned the school’s infrastructure which they said is under developed compared to other institutions in the area.

The school was set to be opened in two weeks following its closure last year after students went on strike. It took the intervention of area lawmakers for the school to be reopened.

It is believed the students were living off campus.
