Students Arrested In Demonstrations

The students were protesting delayed remittance of loans by the Higher Education Loans Board to their accounts (HELB), while also demanding that the funds be increased to between 60,000 and 100,000 shillings.

In Nairobi, students from Nairobi Polytechnic also held demonstrations, barricading Waiyaki Way, as they engaged police in running battles, with the police being forced to lob tear gas canisters to disperse them.

The students took their demos to the HELB offices to present their grievances.

HELB officials however confirmed they had already disbursed the funds.

Students from universities across the country had given helb up to 10 AM today, Friday, to remit funds to their accounts or they would hold demonstrations.
