Students in court for trying to burn school

Three students of Karima Boy High school in Othaya, Nyeri County were on Tuesday arraigned at Othaya Law Courts and charged with attempted arson.

The three, however, pleaded not guilty while appearing before Resident Magistrate Raymond Kibet.

The students were arrested by administration police officers on Saturday night for allegedly being in possession of 3.5 liters of petrol inside the school compound.

They are alleged to have sneaked outside the school and boarded a motorbike to the nearest filling station to purchase the petrol.

According to the school’s Deputy Principal Peter Ndung’u, the suspects managed to sneak out of the school to buy the petrol, despite tight monitoring by several teachers on duty.

The three were ordered to pay a bond of Sh100,000, a cash bail of Sh50,000 or a surety of similar amount, failure to which they will be remanded at the Nyeri Juvenile Home.

The case will be heard on June 25, 2015.
