Students injured in dormitory fire

At least 28 students of Kamandura Girls Secondary School in Limuru were injured when their dormitories caught fire Monday night.

In a statement to newsrooms, Communications Manager of St. Johns Ambulance Fred Majiwa said the inferno, which started at 8PM and destroyed close to ten dormitories, is suspected to have been caused by an electric fault.

According to reports, majority of the students were hurt while trying to rescue their belongings from the inferno.

Ten students were treated at the Tigoni Hospital and released while others with minor injuries were treated by St. John Ambulance medics at the scene.

The fire was contained at around mid-night.

In a separate incident, hundreds of students were left counting losses after their properties were reduced to ashes by a fire that gutted two dormitories at Siwot Secondary School in Bomet County.

Sources say that the 10PM incident happened during the evening prep studies.

According to the Head of Disaster Management in Bomet County, Stanley Mutai, nothing was salvaged.

One of the school workers who sought anonymity said she heard a loud explosion inside the dormitory before the building went up in flames.

Investigations on the incident have since commenced.
