Students protest death of colleague linked to nurses strike

Students of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science Technology burnt a motorbike and seriously injured one motorcyclist along Bondo-Usenge road, following the mysterious death of their female colleague Saturday night.

The students had allegedly held a demonstration and destroyed properties before barricading the road to protest the death of the colleague who is said to have passed on due to the on-going nurses’ strike.

The female student is said to have been rushed to Bondo sub-county hospital with severe headache but had to be transferred to Owens hospital due to lack of personnel to attend to her.

According to Assistant chief of Nyawita sub-location within Bondo town where the Campus is situated Mr. Walter Ochieng’ the female student who had been staying with her partner at a private hostel near the university campus unfortunately passed away shortly after arriving at the Owens hospital.

This is said to have angered the students hence the demonstration which also saw them destroy several business stalls near the university campus.

Bondo OCPD Paul Kiarie who confirmed the incident stated that the students were protesting the mysterious death of that female student and of another male student who also passed on at Siaya County referral hospital yesterday morning.

He has however stated that the police have managed to contain the situation and that things are now calm, adding that they have still kept vigil at the university to ensure there is no further unrest.
