Students start plastic bags clean-up drive in Kapsabet

Nearly 1000 Students from Kapsabet boys’ high school in Nandi County on Thursday took part in a plastic bags cleanup exercise aimed at raising awareness on environmental conservation.

According to Nandi county NEMA director Mr. Vincent Maiva, the exercise will also target major towns in Nandi County in a bid to eliminate litter following the ban on plastic bags.

The national environment complaints committee led by its secretary Dr. John Chumo lauded the ministry of environment for working towards the eradication of plastic bags.

The environmental ombudsman further revealed that about 30 % of the complaints received by the committee come from solid waste management where plastic bags are a major issue.

“The ban on plastic bags and plastic containers will be a success story and am sure that many countries will come to Kenya for benchmarking on this issue of plastic bags” said Chumo.

Also present was Nandi county deputy governor, Dr.Eulita Mitei who pledged the county government’s support to ensure that the ban is fully implemented.

During the exercise, the students swept the streets, collected garbage and picked up randomly-thrown paper, cans, plastic bottles and cups, grocery bags, cigarette butts, ropes, Styrofoam and other rubbish in the town.
