Students suspected of arson arrested in South Imenti

Two students from St Pius Seminary in Nkubu, South Imenti have been arrested on suspicion of burning a school dormitory.

According to the school director Father Lawrence Micheni, the two were nabbed by other students after they were suspected of committing the offence.

During the incident, a police officer was injured by a fire engine as he tried to control a crowd that had gathered at the school.

Police have begun investigations into the incident to determine the motive behind the fire.

Meanwhile, students of Kitonyoni Secondary School in Makueni will today (Friday) be arraigned at the Makueni Law Courts, while at the same time four students from Mituvu Secondary will be arraigned at the Tawa Law Courts over allegations of arson.

Elsewhere, three girls from Mikinduri Secondary School in Tigania Central sub County were on Friday morning arrested after they attempted to burn the school dormitory when others were gathered for assembly, an incident that left several mattresses razed by the fire.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Tigania Central Security Boss Caroline Nzili said the fire was put off shortly after it started and the situation in the school is calm awaiting a meeting by the school’s board to decide whether it will close.

Ms Nzili further noted that preliminary investigations revealed that the three girls were among 13 girls who were arrested a few months ago while planning to set the school on fire.

She added that there will be a meeting of all school heads in the area to discuss school unrest and ensure students suspended from one school are not readmitted in another.

The suspects will be arraigned in court and charged with attempted arson.
