Subukia IDPs decry government neglect

Over 2,000 integrated IDPs from Subukia sub-county in Nakuru have called on the government to enlist them among the beneficiaries of the last phase of the IDPs compensation programme.

Addressing journalists in Nakuru, the IDPs said that despite having all the necessary documents to prove their claims, they have not received any assistance from the government.

While displaying copies of police abstracts and crop damage assessment reports from agricultural extension officers, the post poll skirmishes victims said that they have written several correspondences to the government but their plight has not been addressed at all.

The victims said that they only received relief food from the government three times after they sought refuge from well-wishers, family and friends at the height of the 2007/08 skirmishes.

They expressed fear that they might be left out of the compensation programme that is expected to end any time soon.

The government says that it has already spent over Ksh 15.4 billion in resettling 173,809 households displaced from the 2007/08 Post Election Violence.

According to recommendations from National Consultative Coordination Committee on Internally Displaced Persons (NCCC), there are 98,327 households awaiting resettlement from government.

A case filed by the IDPs against the government in 2011 at the Nakuru High Court is yet to be determined.
