Sugar worth Ksh 20M impounded in Mombasa

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials at the Mombasa Port have impounded eight containers of contraband sugar worth over Ksh 20 million.

Four of the containers had been declared as handbags and belts while the other four had been declared as lubricants and were headed to Uganda.

The containers had 200,000 bags of sugar.

KRA’S Customs Chief Manager in charge of Freight Peter Ng’ang’a said the sugar had been loaded in Dubai and was on transit to Uganda.

This is not the first time people have tried smuggling goods through Kenya.

In October, eight Ugandans were arraigned in a Bungoma Court after they were arrested at the Malaba border trying to transport alcohol into Kenya in a coffin.

The eight, seven men and a woman, were arrested by the Kenya Revenue Authority officials and the police with 1,500 sachets of alcohol worth Ksh 60,480.

Busia county commissioner Emmanuel Odhiambo had earlier said the capsule pick up carrying about 1,500 sachets of foreign liquor was on its way to Nairobi from Mbale through Malava on Nairobi-Malava highway.

Police intercepted the vehicle after they had got information that unknown individuals were planning to smuggle liquor into the country without going through the required clearance.
