Surrender illegal firearms or face arrest, security boss Kangi warns

Narok County Commissioner Moffat Kangi has told all individuals holding illegal firearms in Trans Mara to surrender the weapons within 14 days, warning that after the amnesty period has elapsed, they will face arrest and prosecution.

Speaking to the media after a closed-door meeting with the County Security and Intelligence Committee convened at his office, Kangi further said that legal firearm holders who have misused the privilege risk arrest and the revocation of their firearm licenses.

The Commissioner urged current political leaders and aspirants to desist from inflammatory utterances, holding illegal meetings and intimidation.

Emphasising the importance of peace building, Commissioner Moffat announced that Chiefs and their assistants hold peace meetings to sensitize the public on the need to observe the law through the electioneering period.

In the past, Trans Mara region has been rocked by inter-community conflicts, with the major bone of contention being land.

Kangi revealed that the National Lands Commission (NLC) together with administrators and 20 selected elders from Maasai and Kipsigis communities are working towards a lasting solution to the land ownership tussles.
