Suspect linked to abduction of Italian woman arrested in Tana River

One of the three suspects linked to the abduction of Italian aid worker Sylivia Romano in Chakama area, Kilifi County has been arrested.

Ibrahim Adan Omar was arrested on Sunday evening at around 7pm at Bangale in Tana River County.

Coast Regional Administrative Police (AP) Commander James Akoru confirmed the arrest saying the suspect is cooperating with police.

“I may not relay a detailed report since it might jeopardize the investigation,” said Akoru.

Police sources told journalists that an AK47 rifle, two magazines and 100 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the suspect.

Other key suspects being hunted down over the abduction include; Yusuf Kuno Adan and Said Adan Abdi, and each has a Ksh.1 million bounty placed on their head.

The arrest comes two days after government multi-agency security teams comprising of police and army units reportedly sealed off Boni forest and areas bordering neighboring Lamu and Tana River counties in search of the assailants involved in the attack.

Residents of Malindi in Kilifi County on Monday at around noon witnessed about three police and military choppers flying towards the North where Tana River, Garissa and Lamu Counties are located.

On Sunday, former Tana River Governor Hussein Dado also issued the pastoral community in the region with a five-day ultimatum to find the abducted Italian volunteer Silvia Romano.

Ms. Romano, who was abducted on November 20, was working as a volunteer at Africa Milele Onlus, an non-profit organisation in Kilifi County.

She was seized from her hotel room in an incident that left five people shot and wounded during the attack.

The Ministry of Tourism allayed fears of insecurity at the coastal region as the search of Ms. Romano intensifies.

In a statement to newsrooms the ministry assured investors and tourists planning to travel to the region that it is under constant surveillance.
