Suspected thief lynched in Migori

A 24-year-old suspected thief died on Monday night after he was subjected to mob justice at Nyakwere Centre in Nyatike, Migori County.

The suspect, identified as Sylvester Ochieng was intercepted by locals while he was trying to break into a shop.

Confirming the incident, Nyatike OCPD Dishon Chebaka said the suspect was cutting iron sheet on the roof to enter the shop at 5a.m. when people who were sleeping inside raised alarm.

Mr. Chabaka said the police saved the suspect from the hands of the mob, but he later died while undergoing treatment at Macalder Sub county hospital at 9p.m.

He said the body was moved to Migori county Level Four Hospital mortuary as police continue with investigations.

The OCPD has appealed to the public to stop subjecting suspects to mob justice saying that they should, instead, hand them over to police.

Meanwhile, traders at Nyakweri centre in Nyatike sub county have raised concern over rampant cases of theft in the area asking the relevant authorities to take action.
