Suspects linked to city muggings to remain in custody

Twelve suspects linked to the recent mugging and robbery with violence in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) will spend the weekend in police custody after a Nairobi court allowed the police to detain them pending investigations into the matter.

In an affidavit, the investigating officer told the court that the respondents were arrested on February 8, 2018 in Nairobi CBD by detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following numerous cases of muggings and robbery with violence within CBD.

The officer told the court that during the crackdown, assorted mobile phones, laptops, cameras and accessories were recovered from the respondents and as such there is need to record statements of complainants whose compliance might be hindered if the respondents are
not detained.

Two of the suspects, through their lawyer, however claimed that they deal in selling and repairing electronics saying that the devices belong to various clients.

Milimani court Principal magistrate Martha Mutuku directed the police to expedite investigations into the matter to enable the court make a determination.

The case will be mentioned on Monday, February 15, 2018.
