Suspend implementation of development projects, Siaya gov’t told
Residents of West Uyoma Ward in Rarieda Constituency want the Siaya County Government to suspend implementation of development projects in the region to await a review of the Ward’s 2016/2017 budget.
The residents, led by one Nyagaya Onduru, have written to the office of Siaya County Secretary requesting the executive to halt the implementation of any development project in the region until such a time that the budget shall have been reviewed.
According to Onduru, they had petitioned the Siaya County Assembly to look into their (West Uyoma) budget for the Fiscal year 2016/2017, claiming that their priority projects were altered.
He said that they already got a response from the county assembly speaker’s office indicating that the matter will be handled when members shall have resumed from recess.
Onduru stated that their fear was that the executive may carry on with implementation of the projects before the matter is addressed by the county assembly, hence the decision to also serve the county secretary with a petition.
The residents were addressing journalists shortly after serving the county secretary with the petition at the county headquarters in Siaya Town where he pleaded with the executive to suspend the implementation of the projects, failure to which they will be forced to seek legal redress.
Onduru stated that most of the alterations were done without consultation with members of the public, adding that some were also underfunded as others got more allocations than required, which in their view would not benefit the community effectively.
They also complained of uneven allocation of funds across the five sub-locations in West Uyoma Ward.
