Swazuri gives land grabbers 90 days to surrender public land

The National Land Commission (NLC) has issued a 90-day ultimatum to grabbers of public land warning that the government will repossess the land once the set deadline lapses.

Speaking in Molo, Nakuru County on Friday after reclaiming a two-acre piece of land that was surrendered by a private developer, NLC Chair Muhammad Swazuri said the government would reclaim all land belonging to the National Youth Service (NYS), Kenya Prisons Department, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) that has been grabbed.

“Over the years, land belonging to different government agencies has been grabbed in different parts of the country and I want to assure Kenyans that the commission will reclaim that land,” said a resolute Swazuri.

He added that the perpetrators will be arrested and charged in court.

Swazuri regretted that some “powerful politicians” are behind the cartels that have grabbed land thus making reclamation difficult.

Adressing parents at Koige Secondary school in Kuresoi, Nakuru County, the chairperson further said that his commission was in the final stages of processing title deeds for all public schools, a move he said would keep the grabbers “at bay”.

This comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the commission to repossess all NYS Land on Friday, February 2, 2018.

“We must recover all NYS land and ensure that we put it to good use,” said President Kenyatta.

The President was speaking during the launch of the NYS Tuko Tayari Campaign aimed at imparting skills to the youth.
