Switch off street lights, MCAs tell Kenya Power

The Last Mile Electricity Project in Naivasha is facing a bleak future as Members of the Nakuru County assembly complaining about the high electricity bills that are being charged to the county, just one week after the lights were officially launched by Energy CS Charles Keter.

MCAs have complained about the management of the project, saying that the street lights have not been switched off since they were connected four weeks ago, even during the day.

This has raised concerns that the county government may be unable to pay the power bill come end month.

According to the Lakeview MCA and Chairman of the Implementation Committee in the county assembly, Mr. Simon Wanyoike, the lights had changed the fortunes of the lakeside town, turning it into a 24-hour economy hub.

“We are, however, concerned that the high power bill could turn out to be the main challenge to the county government as they are on even during the day,” said the Lakewood MCA in a rejoinder.

His sentiments were echoed by nominated MCA Esther Njeri who called upon officers from Kenya Power to resolve the electrical problem.

According to Jose Wa Funda, a motorcycle operator, the project had made it easier to access various estates in the county.

“Our main concern is the failure by Kenya Power to switch off the lights during the day as this could lead to a high pay bill for the county government,” he said.
