Tabitha Karanja, husband arrested after being holed up in Naivasha brewery for over 12 hours

Tabitha Karanja and her husband Joseph, the co-owners of Keroche Breweries, have been arrested.

They had spent over 12 hours holed up at their Naivasha-based brewery after orders were issued for their arrest.

Detectives led them out of the building into separate Subaru vehicles that had been parked outside their premises since Wednesday night.

Tabitha Karanja avoided the gaze of the cameras, appearing to be in a more sombre mood; a deviation from her tough stance during her phone interview with Citizen TV’s Jeff Koinange.

She had told Koinange that she would not hand herself over to the police as she had not been officially informed of the arrest warrant.

The Keroche boss had even accused the Kenya Revenue Authority and the Director of Public Prosecution of targeting her, insisting that her company had no tax arrears.

A statement released minutes after the interview on Citizen TV said: “We are deeply shocked beyond imagination by both the allegations made and the manner at which the matter has been handled from the dissemination of the information. My shock is how a local investor can be, humiliated, embarrassed and denied the well deserved respect…”

DPP Noordin Haji ordered the arrest and prosecution of the Karanjas over alleged evasion of taxes amounting to Ksh.14.4 billion.
