Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja impeached

Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja has been impeached by the county assembly over alleged gross misconduct.

The motion to impeach the county boss was tabled by Rong’e ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Harris Keke and supported by 30 out of the 33 MCAs; the remaining 3 were absent.

The MCAs cited various reasons for kicking out Governor Samboja among them failure to submit to the county assembly an annual report on the implementation status of the county policies and plans.

They further accused him of failing to address the county assembly as required, misappropriation of funds as well as misleading the people of Taita Taveta in dissolving the county.

According to the MCAs, the governor also failed to remit statutory deductions of the relevant institutions including Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), National Social Security Fund (NSSF) among others.

Governor Samboja in July this year hit the headlines after he embarked on a campaign to dissolve the county government and pave way for fresh elections.

“I think the best gift we can give to the people of Taita Taveta is to go back to elections so that we’re chosen afresh,” he said during a press address.

“For those who will be re-elected, we will thank God; and to those who will not come back, we will also thank God. Because the Bible says we must give gratitude to God in all issues.”
