Taj Mall: More police deployed, teargas fired as looters sneak in

More police officers were deployed to Taj Mall in Nairobi’s Embakasi estate as the demolition exercise continued.

Another excavator has also arrived at the compound in addition to the first two that were spotted parked outside from as early as 3am.

The demolition had kicked off at 6am with only police officers and curious onlookers at the scene.

However, as news spread that the demolition of Taj Mall had begun, more people gathered outside including tenants who had not removed their items from the building.

At one point, those conducting the demolition were informed that there was a generator in the building that had to be removed before the process could continue.

Looters then took the opportunity to gain access and were seen running out of the building with stolen equipment.

Tenants had been given a two-week notice to vacate the premises, a notice that lapsed on August 31.

On Saturday morning, some were still pleading with police officers to let them retrieve their belongings.

Residents gathered outside the compound in large numbers to witness the much anticipated Taj Mall demolition that had been put off for several weeks.

However, a defiant Ramesh Gorasia, the owner of the building kept away and had not issued any statement as at 1pm on Saturday.

In August, Gorasi dared the government to bring down Taj Mall, insisting that he had been given the proper documents and would go to court.
