Tana River County heeds presidents directive to pay doctors

The County Government of Tana River is the latest county to pay their doctors for the three months they were on strike as per President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive last week.

Speaking at Asago in Madogo division while popularizing the Jubilee Party after defecting from Wiper Party last month, Governor Hussein Dado said they resolved to pay the doctors so as to keep the 12 doctors in the county, which is an improvement from two doctors a few years ago.

Dado urged his colleagues to follow suit and pay doctors so that the strike impasse is dealt with once and for all.

Council of Governors Chairman Peter Munya had said counties will need Ksh3 billion from Treasury to pay doctors since the money meant for their salaries was used on emergencies during the strike period.

Dado noted that his administration will not penalize any doctor for seeking their rights through industrial action but warned them that they stand to lose their jobs if they strike again after the government reversed the hiring of foreign doctors.

Governor Dado recounted the untold suffering and lives lost during the 100-day doctors’ strike, saying the country should never go back to such a situation.

He urged the residents to maintain peace during this electioneering period and accused his opponents of misleading communities that the elders had blessed their line up on a negotiated democracy saying it was a lie aimed at dividing communities in Tana River.
