Teacher canes pupil to death

Teacher canes pupil to death

A 14 year old standard six boy from Gathungo Primary School in Nyeri died after he was allegedly caned by his teacher for being late for class.

Kevin Kagura died on Wednesday evening shortly after being caned.

Speaking to Inooro FM, some of his classmates said that he (Kagura) collapsed while being caned.

According to the child’s father, however, Kagura was healthy and had never experienced seizures or diagnosed with epilepsy.

Kagura’s classmates alleged that the teacher, identified as Mr Gachoka, canned the deceased and four other pupils ‘badly’ while shouting at them.

The school’s head teacher, Mr Joseph Kagume, has been accused of trying to cover-up the case by allegedly promising to buy the pupils cakes if they did not say what happened.

By the time of going to press, the head teacher had not given any concrete comment saying that he was in a meeting at the time of the incident.

He, however, admitted that the deceased, alongside four other pupils, were caned at the time.

He also admitted advising the accused teacher not to show up in school the following day saying that angry parents and pupils may have lynched him.

Area OCPD Michael Mbaluku said the matter is already with the police and investigations have commenced.
