Teachers issue seven-day strike notice over school unrest

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has now issued a 7 -day ultimatum to the government to close all schools over student’s unrest or face a teachers strike.

KUPPET Chairman Omboko Milemba  demanded for an unconditional release of arrested students and teachers who have been linked to arson attacks in schools.

The union has further opposed a directive by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to Principals and senior teachers to reside in school compounds saying the directive is against standards of fair labour practices.

Speaking to the media Thursday morning, KUPPET deputy Secretary General Moses Nthurima also ruled out the involvement of teachers in the wave of unrest witnessed in schools across the country.

This comes amid numerous incidents of arson in schools, with over a hundred schools including Sunshine School and St. Patrick Iten being set on fire.
