Teachers most alcohol loving group – Alcohol board director

Teachers in Uasin Gishu County have been identified as the largest group that love the bottle compared to any other  people.

Speaking on Friday during a seminar to sensitize teachers on the effects of alcohol in Eldoret Town, the director Alcohol and Regulation Board, Armstrong Rono, said that it is worrying to see teachers drinking alcohol while even on duty.

He said that teachers spend most of their time with children, and it is important for them to set a good example to the learners.

“Children are impressionable and they do what they see adults do and not what they say. We want teachers to be role models of our children,” said Rono.

He noted that many teachers are being taken to rehabilitation centres due to alcohol abuse, terming it as a shameful picture, adding that treating an addict is an expensive affair.

“Treating one addict in a rehabilitation centre is very costly. The least is 90,000 shillings for one person and you are not sure if the one person will reform.”

While giving statistics, he said that out of 10 people who are taken to alcohol rehabilitation centers, only four are reformed.
