Teachers Threaten Mass Withdrawal from NHIF

In his press briefing at Nyahururu on Tuesday, Kuppet’s Laikipia County branch secretary Ndung’u Wangenye said the new rates are unfavourable to teachers and should be revised.

“The move by the Ministry of Health to implement the new NHIF charges which have been increased by 500 per cent is unfair,” he said.

The government announced that the new NHIF rates will be applicable starting April 1, 2015 following the publication of a legal gazette notice on the new NHIF contributions.

He claimed that the new rates were exorbitant and threatened to move to court to seek legal redress if they rates are not revised.

Wangenye claimed that the new rates will create room for corruption by some individuals, and told the government to set favourable rates, failure to which teachers will withdraw from NHIF and seek an alternative an health scheme.

The teachers’ threat comes barely a week after Deputy President William Ruto assured Kenyans that the government will ensure the NHIF fee does not to exceed Sh200 in order to make healthcare affordable.

There has been no update on the promise by the government as the first deduction was made at the end of April.
