Teachers to remain on strike KNUT

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) now says the teachers’ strike, which is in its third week, will continue until they pay rise demands are addressed fully.

KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion said all public school teachers will remain on strike until Judge Nelson Abuotha rules on the legality of their strike next week Friday.

In a statement to newsrooms, Sossion intimated that teachers will abide by Tuesday’s ruling by the Employment and Labor Relations Court Judge Nelson Abuotha asking them to avoid street protests.

He said that teachers will only decide on whether to resume duty or not after the September 25th ruling on the petition filed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) challenging the legality of their strike.

Sossion refuted claims by President Uhuru Kenyatta that the government cannot afford their revised pay.

This comes as CORD leader Raila Odinga, who was speaking during a breakfast meeting with media editors under editor’s guild, backed the teachers strike, blaming the jubilee government of ignoring court orders in the teachers’ pay stalemate.
