Teachers Want Parliament to Annul New Education Rules

The Kenya national Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) want the Basic Education Regulations 2015 annuled.

KNUT chairman Mudzo Nzili has reiterated the new education rules gazetted by Kaimenyi violate the constitution and are meant to promote corruption in schools.

Nzili has called for a review of the regulations involving all stakeholders saying Basic Education Regulations 2015 will promote conflicts in the public education sector.

KUPPET Secretary General Omboko Milemba are geared towards micro-managing public schools and usurping powers of Teachers Service Commission.

The teachers’ union bosses were speaking when they appeared before the Senate committee on delegated legislation looking into the row over Basic Education Regulations 2015.

Parents’ association operating illegally

Speaking after the teachers’ unions made their submission, Senate legislative delegation committee led by their chair Nandi Senator Francis Sang castigated Kaimenyi for making the regulation without consulting the relevant stakeholders, saying it was a violation of the constitution.

Sang has further appealed to the teachers’ union to consult widely with the relevant parliamentary committees dealing with education matters before they issue strike ultimatums.

Both the Senate committee and the teachers’ unions questioned the legality of the National Parents Association led by Musau Ndunda saying they are operating illegally, with the teachers’ unions calling for the disbandment of the association.

Nzili has further asked the President to fire Kaimenyi saying that he has brought more problems and disorganisation in the education sector and is being used by corruption cartels in the education ministry.

The committee met officials from KUPPET, KNUT, KEPSHA, and KESSHA, and will later meet with the CS and TSC before issuing a verdict on the Basic Education Regulations 2015.
