Teachers want pay agreement with govt signed by October

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) wants the government, through the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC), to move with speed and ensure teachers sign the Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA) for the period 2017-2022.

KNUT Siaya branch Executive Secretary, Gilbert Ndolo Owuor, want the Jubilee administration to ensure that teachers sign the agreement by October this year.

Ndolo further wants the implementation of the agreement to start early next year as opposed to July saying that it may be ignored by the next government and especially if Jubilee does not get a second term.

“We are supporting the decision that the next CBA (2017-2021) be signed before October but we want the payment to begin immediately. We should not wait until July 2017 because this government is the one we are signing the agreement with and we do not know what the election results will be. If they want us to support them, they should sign it,” said Ndolo.

The Executive Secretary, who lauded the union’s Secretary General Wilson Sossion for declining to attend a TSC workshop in Kisumu, has at the same time advised head teachers not to pick the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination papers for their centers unless the agreement is signed.

The KNUT official made the remarks in Bondo Town Wednesday.
