Teachers want Salaries Commission dissolved over job evaluation

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) is now threatening to collect signatures to petition for the dissolution of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

KUPPET says it will contest and block the planned teachers’ job evaluation.

Led by the KUPPET deputy Secretary General Moses Nthurima, the post-primary school teachers union criticised the SRC for allegedly over-stepping its mandate of setting salaries and instead engaging in job evaluation.

KUPPET claims that under the constitution teachers could only be evaluated by Teachers Service Commission.

“We can only welcome the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) that is mandated to employ teachers, to promote, to place and so on. This SRC that we are seeing trying to take up powers of other commissions should be stopped and we will collect a million signatures to do so,” said Mr Nthurima.

Omboko Milemba, the national chairman, said the union will also object to the implementation of the new National Hospital Insurance Fund medical cover.

The teachers’ leaders were speaking Nandi during the union’s annual general meeting.
