Teachers’ Unions To Meet TSC In A Crisis Meeting

The meeting convened by TSC seeks to avert the looming teachers' strike called by the unions over pay rise.

TSC is set to table its offer to teachers during the meeting.

The commission announced on Tuesday last week that it will be tabling an offer to teachers in a bid to avert a teachers' strike.

The letter read in part, “TSC has prepared a comprehensive document detailing its response and/or offer on the unions’ demands and is ready to table it for further deliberations during the next consultative meeting scheduled for 3rd January 2015 at the TSC headquarters.”

The unions are however skeptical about the meeting with some terming it a public relations gimmick.

‘‘Tomorrow is make or break, the government knows our demands which we have tabled in 26 meetings, ’’ KNUT Sec. Gen Wilson Sossion said.

‘‘We will attend but we will not call off the strike yet’’, KUPPET officials said.

The unions’ are demanding an increase in basic salary of between 180% and 290%, an increase in house allowance by up to 50 percent of the basic salary, payment of leave allowance and township allowance.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has asked parents to ignore a strike ultimatum from the unions and take their children to school despite the outcome of the talks today.
