Tearful Ngilu testifies in murder case of former Kitui mayor

Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu was in Kitui High Court on Wednesday where she testified in the murder case of former mayor Martha Mwangangi.

Mwangangi was killed after she was ran over by a fire engine truck in December 2016.

The death occurred during a demonstration by traders who claimed that their kiosks were demolished Kitui county government officers without notice.

A county fire-engine is said to have crushed her as she protested alongside the traders.

According to Mrs. Ngilu, the vehicle was not fitted with firefighting equipment at the time.

She told the court that she narrowly escaped death after her body guard shoved her out of harm’s way.

The driver of the fire engine Titus Isika has been charged with the murder of Mrs. Mwangangi and attempting to kill Ngilu.

Mrs. Ngilu was at the time campaigning for the Kitui gubernatorial seat.

On Wednesday, appearing before Kitui High Court Judge Lilian Mutende, the Kitui Governor further said that the county fire engine was later recovered from Wikililye area where it had been apparently hidden.

She however said she could not identify the accused because she did not see his face.

The case resumes on June 31 when other witnesses will present their testimony.
