Tension as GSU officers deployed after mob kills Chuka OCS and Chief

A contingent of General Service Unit (GSU) officers has been deployed to Kamahindi area of Tharaka Nithi County where an Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and area Chief were lynched.

Citizen Digital understands that some of the local residents had begun fleeing the area on Thursday morning as the security officers  moved in to handle what appears to be a row between the residents and local administrators.

Chief Japhet Majau Mukengu was beaten to death on Tuesday by residents who were allegedly angered after the chief’s brother detained some goats belonging to one of the locals.

Five suspects were arrested on the same night over the chief’s murder.

On Wednesday, Chuka OCS Joseph Kinyua went to the area with another police officer in pursuit of a sixth suspect believed to be the ringleader of the group that killed the Chief.

They were, however, attacked by locals, with the OCS being hacked to death while the officer narrowly escaped the attack.

The five suspects were arraigned at the Chuka Law Courts and Thursday where the prosecution was allowed 15 days to detain the suspects pending completion of investigations.
