Tharaka Nithi health workers strike enters day two

The health workers strike in Tharaka-Nithi County entered its second day Tuesday, November 8 with the medics saying they will continue with their industrial action until grievances they have raised with the county government have been addressed fully.

The health workers took to the streets of Chuka Town demanding an immediate stoppage in delaying of paying their salaries, remittance of their deductions to various institutions, unpaid staff, and personal numbers.

Speaking during the demonstrations, Kenya Union of Nurses Secretary, Kenneth Micheni, said that they are  not going to allow any form of intimidation from the county officials.

“We have been intimidated by these county officials for so long and we will not continue to allow this to continue. We are only getting back to work after all the issues we have raised since August 8, 2014 have been addressed,” he lamented.

Kenya Union of Nurses  branch chairman, Fabian Marigu, said that 133 health workers whose salaries were stopped three months ago after they were accused of being ghost workers are yet to be paid.

He said the county government had promised to release their salary in two weeks’ time but nothing has been done.

“Health workers are never given personal numbers, pay slips and harmonization of strenuous allowances, whenever we demand for them we get intimidated by being transferred to remote areas in different parts of the country.”

Patients in Tharaka Nithi have been forced to seek medical services in health facilities from neighboring counties.
