Tharaka Nithi nurses say to remain on strike despite sacking threat

Business came to a standstill at Muthambi Level Four Hospital in Tharaka Nithi County after striking nurses invaded the facility and smoked out their colleagues who had reported back to work.

According to Kenya National Union of Nurse’s executive secretary, Fabiano Marigu, the nurses will continue with their strike until their demands are met.

This comes just a day after the County Government of Tharaka Nithi fired more than 300 nurses who have persistently stayed on strike for more than six weeks despite signing a return to work formula.

This was after Governor Samuel Ragwa declared their positions vacant and called applications for 368 nursing positions.

Governor Ragwa further warned the striking nurses against stepping into the health facilities saying: “They will not be paid even if they return to work.”

“We will not allow our people to suffer while we have already paid them the money they are demanding,” said Ragwa.

Ragwa indicated that the fate of the nurses now lie with county public service board.

Marigu has, however, rubbished those claims saying that none of the 368 striking nurses has been given a dismissal letter.

The  over 300 nurses have been on strike for the last 45 days demanding promotion, nursing service allowance and remittance of various statutory deductions.
