The Busy Kapsabet Slaughter House Closed Down

The class B slaughter house and the only meat provider in the town was closed for what health officials termed as ‘extremely unhygienic and unsafe’ conditions.

Health officials further added that the slaughter facility which was built 34 years ago is in a dilapidating state.

The slaughter house broken doors has made the facility a dog habitat hence placing fear of rabies infested dogs infecting meat being stored there.

Clogged sewerage systems in the facility have made drainage impossible where raw animal blood and intestinal wastes are now draining to open fields around the slaughter house.

The notice generated anger from meat and cattle dealers in the town who threatened to forcefully continue with operations at the said slaughter house despite the closure notice.

They also questioned the timing of closure adding that this season has a high demand for meat.

Meat suppliers had earlier on received orders demanding them to immediately stop the slaughtering exercise due to unbearable conditions at the slaughter house.

Residents of Kapsabet town and its environs will now be forced to forego their daily supply of meat following the close down.

The closure is expected to affect farmers and businessmen in Kapsabet Town where Over 200 individuals including meat suppliers, slaughter boys, cattle herders and dealers are set to lose jobs and daily livelihoods.
